Variety In Trunks

Trunks have taken on a surprisingly varied appearance over the years, starting off as the chief luggage piece for long journeys before gradually becoming more decorative and functional items. There are a variety of different names given to the forms of trunks that were created such as steamer trunks, dresser trunks and wardrobe trunks.

Each of these trunks were an invaluable part of the lifestyle of the frequent traveller in the 19th century because journeys invariably lasted for weeks at a time. The trunks were required to store a large number of clothes and personal belongings and they had to be stored in such a way that they would not be ruined.

The dresser trunk is a special type of trunk that contains drawers and, when opened completely, sometimes contained fold out tables or desks.

Nowadays, these types of trunks are valued as collectible items or as decorative antiques that look particularly attractive in the home.
