Are white gold earrings white or are they gold?  What exactly is white gold? Here’s a fact:  Gold is yellow; period. Alloys and metals are added to gold to change its color. White gold was developed as a more affordable answer to platinum and jewelers usually choose to use Rhodium to plate white gold. Rhodium is very white, reflective, virtually tarnish proof, and has an extremely hard finish. A platinum piece of jewelry costs five times the cost of the same piece cast in white gold. Platinum may be recommended for high wear daily items like rings and bracelets. White gold has a much whiter and brighter shine and will probably not need to be re-plated. Thus, when making your decision between white gold earrings, gold earrings, and platinum earrings, consider the appearance you are looking for, the cost factor, and the durability that you can expect from its use.
