Put your hand inside the shoe and check for areas that could possibly rub your feet. Leather is a good material for hiking shoes but it should be the top grade of leather and also be flexible and soft for comfort. Some hiking shoes are made from new synthetic materials and they look more like a conventional running shoe than a hiking shoe.

Where the sole of your foot rests in the shoe is called the inner-sole and it needs to be seam-free and smooth. Additional padding or cushioning will give extra comfort when you are hiking; a leather inner-sole will help your feet breathe and keep cool.
