Being a florist is about loving flowers and having a natural interest in them. It is about enjoying a flowery surrounding which one will inevitably be exposed to if they become florists- and a beautiful environment it is too. A florist is a floral designer as well as the owner and manager of a flower shop. It is important therefore for one to also acquire some skills on how to run a business efficiently. Unlike most careers, being a florist is not exactly hard work. One does not need to obtain some special license or take a particular course. All that is needed is a keen interest in all things flowery, good coordination of colors, some amount of creativity and of course excellent skills in customer service. It is advisable however, for one to go take an apprenticeship with a florist who is already established in order to learn the skills of the trade. One may also consider being formally trained at a formal school in order to strengthen his or her skills.

The first step in becoming a florist is to further one’s florist skills. Though not necessary, it is advisable for one to get some form of training and adequate research should be carried out in all the top floral training schools. One than being an apprentice, one can also talk to local florists and learn about the advantages and disadvantages, the different situations that may arise within the business and how they can be dealt with.

Practice, practice and more practice is an integral part of becoming a florist as it is the only way for one to improve their skills. Aspiring florists should practice different techniques of flower arrangement and offer flower arrangements to families’ weddings, proms, funerals or any other event that may need flower arrangements.

One should have intricate knowledge of a wide range of flowers and the sentiments that they represent. It is also important for one to have business acumen in order to be able to run the business efficiently. Being a florist is a great experience as it offers one the opportunity to run a business in a calm environment that doesn’t resemble business. Where there is a keen interest, one is guaranteed to be happy expressing their creativity through flowers.
