Hemorrhoids is a common condition found in adult men and women, aged 40 to 65. It is estimated that millions of people worlwide will suffer at one time or another during their lives from the symptoms of hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are defined as swollen, enlarged and inflamed veins in or around the anal area. They may be internal hemorrhoids or external depending on where they are located. There are a variety of factors which may contribute to hemorrhoidal flare-ups. Straining due to constipation or heavy lifting are two prevalent causes. Other contributing factors may be pregnancy, poor diet, infections and heredity. Primary symptoms of hemorrhoids is bleeding, itching and pain. Internal hemorrhoids usually bleed but are not painful. Exterior hemorrhoids can bleed and itch and also cause mild to extreme pain. There are several options when considering a plan to treat hemorrhoid symptoms. Treatments vary from ice chips and sitz baths to over the counter creams, ointments or pads or, in extreme cases, surgery.
