Kindle DX More Choices For Publishers

Amazon.com unveiled its newest e-reader, the Kindle DX, in early May. The improved reader – an upgrade from Amazon’s popular Kindle 2 – has many wondering if the Kindle DX is just one more nail in the coffin of newspapers and magazines.

Anyone following the publishing world knows that newspapers and magazines are going out of business or falling into bankruptcy at a dizzying pace. Industry observers are now wondering if the Kindle DX will help or hurt the publishing industry. The big question: Will young readers turn further away from traditional print and embrace the Kindle DX?

It’s easy to see why there’s such concern. The Kindle DX, which will begin shipping to retail outlets this summer, is a wonderful machine. It features a clear 9.7-inch screen and can store up to 3,500 electronic books, newspapers and magazines. Its hefty price tag of $489 reflects this quality.

But maybe instead of fearing the Kindle DX, publishers should welcome its arrival. The machine may hatch a new generation of readers, readers hungry for content. Maybe the Kindle DX, and e-readers in general, represent the future of publishing, not the past.
