Cultural Perceptions of Menopause
The psychological effects women experience during menopause may be influenced by culture. For example, women from cultures that perpetuate an expectation of youthful beauty in magazines and media create an atmosphere that is negative about aging and no doubt would lead individual women to have ambivalent or negative views about menopause and aging in general. Could this possible cause more anxiety and depression during menopause? Studies are beginning to show that this may indeed be the case. In societies where aging is a sign of wisdom and the elderly command respect in the community such as the Filipino culture, women report a much easier transition in menopause suffering fewer psychological effects. Although Filipino women still have the signs of menopause, they report an overall more positive experience about menopause with none of the stigma that some cultures attach to older women.
